Did You Know?

On this page we want to let anyone interested know some of the facts regarding Rhug Estate, from the awards we have won to the environmental works we are undertaking.

A lot of what we do we take for granted as it forms the ethos of our business. We enjoyed putting together this page and hope you enjoy reading it….so all that remains is to ask the question, ‘did you know?'

Quality food produced with care

All our meat, with the exception of venison is reared by the Estate; pigs, poultry, game, beef & lamb. This allows us to manage our whole supply chain ensuring consistent quality and availability.

All our meat is traditionally hung to ensure excellent flavour and tenderness. For example our beef is hung on the bone for 28 days, which gives it a taste and tenderness that the retailers of mass produced beef can only dream of.

Each of our animal varieties has been specifically chosen for taste: Aberdeen Angus beef, Duroc pork and our award winning Welsh lamb.

We have just started a program of bison breeding that has seen the introduction of 4 cows and a bull. They will be allowed to settle down to their new environment before being on show to the many visitors who already come to the Organic retail shop and café at Rhug just off the main A5 two miles west of Corwen. There are already a number of bison herds in England and Scotland but there were none in Wales. At Rhug we hope that the animals will prove to be of great interest to people passing up the A5. Although they will be fully visible from the road people will be able to view them at close quarters by entering the viewing area of our specially built Bison Corral.

Our animals travel less than 3 miles to the abattoir. This ensures they are free from stress and don’t suffer from traveling from one end of the country to the other as many supermarket-bought animals do.

Award-winning taste

Here at Rhug Organic Farm we take food very seriously. Over the last 3 years we have won 16 major awards, all for food, production and operational excellence. The care and pride we take means that the food you put on your plate has been grown, nurtured and produced with the kind of care and attention that puts others to shame. Taste really does matter to us. For example our organic lamb was voted the best tasting lamb in Wales 2005…say no more.

Looking after our natural environment

This however is really only half of the story. Over the last 5 years the Estate has embarked on an ambitious project to create an environment that is ideal not only for our farm animals but also the natural wildlife. To do this we have planted 300 oak trees, created 4 miles of green lanes, planted 5 miles of new hedges, fenced off rough areas to preserve and develop the habitat, and embarked on a 20 year scheme to rejuvenate the natural woodlands and fenced off part of the riverbank to preserve the flora and fauna.

We have recently opened a nature walk to allow everyone the chance to see the benefit of organic farming and the results of putting something back into the land rather than just taking. We hope you take us up on our offer and come visit us to see for yourself.
