Canoeing
The Alwen is an upland spate river which is controlled by the River Dee Management Scheme. The river offers grade 1 -3 canoeing over a 4 mile length (with one definite portage) in a wild and scenic part of Wales. The river roughly runs alongside the A5 trunk road and is open to the public through the Welsh Canoe Association and can be paddled from 1st January until 17th October there after the river is closed to ensure that no damage occurs to spawning salmon.
The section of the River Alwen covered by the agreement with the Welsh Canoe Association runs from Blaen y ddol to Cefn Rhug. The agreement allows the use of the access and egress points, car parking and toilet facilities at the finish point. The agreement does not apply to any tributaries. No agreement exists for canoeing on Rhug Estate land below Glanalwen ford.
